A Nevada man could be sent to prison after he admitted he was driving under the influence of alcohol when he hit and killed a 33-year-old Kamas man who was competing Oct. 10 in the Ragnar Relay Las Vegas.
Joshua Salayich pleaded guilty in Clark County District Court Jan. 7 to one count of driving under the influence resulting in death or substantial bodily injury. A May 10 sentencing hearing for Salayich is slated in Henderson, Nev.
Investigators said Salayich, 25, lost control of his vehicle and struck Jeremy Kunz outside of Las Vegas at about 4:35 a.m. The car was on the shoulder of the road when it hit Kunz, who was standing on the side of the road. He was one of about 2,400 athletes running in the race.
Kunz died at the scene after his body was thrown several feet. He had reportedly gotten out of the van to give some water to one of his teammates.
Police said the suspect, who suffered minor injuries, ran from the car after he hit Kunz. Officers caught Salayich about a half-mile from the scene of the accident, according to investigators.
Kunz was an avid runner who was competing in his third Ragnar Relay. He had lived in the South Summit area for about 10 years and worked as a software manager at Kamas-based All West Communications.
