In Madison, salting streets means choosing between clear roads and clean lakes |
(1) More Photos Despite 35 years of effort, the levels of sodium and chloride in five Madison-area lakes and in some city wells have risen significantly, according to an annual assessment of salt use by the Madison-Dane County Health Department. The findings come even as many Madison streets are expected to remain snow-covered while roads outside the city are clear following a snowfall expected to end Wednesday. Much of the difference can be chalked up to salt. For years, in a...

Panel backs change to lake setback rule |
MADISON - The Plan Commission on Monday voted in favor of a change to the city's waterfront setback law, which could help propel the proposed Edgewater Hotel redevelopment. The proposed change, approved on a 5-4 vote with chairwoman Nancy Fey casting the tie-breaker, would require nonresidential lakefront property owners to build no closer to a lake than existing buildings. Currently, such projects require a variance to avoid having to move entire buildings farther from the lake, said City Council President Pro Tem Mark Clear.

Fashion: Sarah Jessica Parker + Halston = Mega Celebrity Fashion Designer
According to Women''s Wear Daily, Sarah Jessica Parker is joining fashion house Halston as the president and chief creative officer. We''re all used to hearing about celebs inking licensing deals or even designing their own lines. But this SJP appointment takes the celebrity designer thing to a whole new level. Used to be, the garment biz required experience, smarts and talent. Seems all you need now is star wattage As much as I like Sarah Jessica Parker''s style -- although much of her icon status credit should really go to "Sex and the City" wardrobe genius Pat Field -- I can''t help but wonder where this trend will lead...
